Juniper species typically grow in rocky, infertile soils, in fields, meadows, pastures, open woods and other settings, almost from sea level to alpine sites. Three juniper species are very variable shrubs found in several forms, including a small tree up to 10 m of pyramidal or columnar form; an erect or mat-forming shrub. Juniper berries contain essential oil. This volatile oil is made up mostly of monoterpenes. Purpose of this study is to present the contents of essential oil and GC-MS analyses of three species: common juniper (Juniperus communis L.), western prickly juniper (Juniperus oxycedrus L.) and savin juniper (Juniperus sabina L.) of genus Juniperus. The GC-MS profiles of essential oil composition are showed large differences among major constituents (α-pinene, sabinene, myrcene, limonene and β-caryophyllene). This knowledge can be used in plant breeding, pharmacy, distillation industry and gastronomy.
