Contribution brings new data on timber of ecosystems production services in Carpathian beech forests of Transcarpathian Ukraine, Slovakia and Poland. The volume of production is different between the south and north parts of the Carpathians. The volume of dead wood in the Ukrainian and Slovak virgin forests is greater than in the Polish virgin forests. It is caused by a different influence of man in 17-19. centuries on beech forests in the southern and northern parts of the Carpathians. Dead wood is an important part of forest ecosystems significantly differentiating the forest from other nonforest communities. Wood as a substrate enriches the environment from the viewpoint of biodiversity being together with soil the richest niche of the forest. Dead wood humification then connects it with soil involving a number of elements (particularly carbon) into cycling. It is irreplaceable in some types of forest ecosystems such as mountain forests and forest regeneration on a decomposed wood. The development of beech forests was also influenced by the different climate of the northern part of the Carpathians with a damp and cooler Baltic climate than the southern part of the Carpathians with a warmer Pannonian climate. Provisioning production ecosystem services are essential to the wellbeing of human society. Beech forests are characterized by high diversity and species variability in the ecosystem, and by the abundance and diversity of multiple interactions in the complex network of feedbacks. They have high ecological integrity, stability and complexity.
