Two mathematical approaches are considered. The first seeks to identify the special characteristics of ecosystems which are responsible for their stability and which are readily measured. Analysis of changes in these characteristics gives information about the relative stability of the ecosystems. The 2nd preferable approach includes the construction of a mathematical model. Analysis of different concrete types of perturbations is discussed.
