Concentration of 25 selected elements in a 2 year old needles of Picea abies (L.) K a r s t. and Pinus sylvestris L. from 141 permanent monitoring plots (network of 4 × 4 km) from the industrial region of Žiar nad Hronom are completed with a critical assessment of their content in relation to boundary values. 81.4 % of the total variance were explained with principal component analysis through 8 components. The highest concentrations of Al, Be, Cd, Co, Cr, F, Fe, Hg, Li, Ni, Pb, Sr and V were found in the A pollution zone and apparently they directly connect with production of aluminium. In the zone B there were increased levels of Ba, K, Mn, N, Na, Rb, S and Se which can connect with operation of thermal power plant. The highest values of Cu and Zn in C zone and Ca and Mg in D zone were found. Correlational analysis of 25 elements from spruce and pine needles from Žiar region was executed provided that the number of high-correlational pairs (r ≥ 0.9) leads to an expectation of mutual element reaction. Only high positively correlable pairs of elements, which are emitted in the pollution zone A in the region of alluminium plants were found also in pollution zone A. In B zone, neither positive nor negative correlated relation was found among pairs of elements with r higher or equal to ± 0.9. In C zone only a high-positively correlated pair between Be/Co was found.
