Through the steady-state model Profile we assessed possible effects of atmospheric deposition on changes in soil chemistry influencing the forest growth. The research run at three forest sites in the Tatra Mts, Slovakia. It responded to the topical demand for describing the effects of acidification at the level of ecosystems. In spite of evident reductions in sulphur emissions we found that the low-risk critical loads were exceeded for Norway spruce, European larch and Arolla pine. The critical deposition limits were calculated at intervals from 1514 to 2511 eq.ha-1.yr1 and the acid load values range from 1494 to 3424 eq.ha-1.yr1. The gradual change in tree species composition and adjustment of forest tending procedures can decrease the total acid deposition effect and soil acidification in small scale. The use of the model at the site level can be very helpful in protecting the most sensitive parts of a landscape.
